A bit too much gore and sex for the sake of it (and I am not squeamish nor prude), and not enough meat on the bones. The story also relies on too many coincidences and some plot points (like the jail break) that ask an unreasonable suspension of disbelief.
Her prose in the past came over as a bit too goth for me, but that is a matter of taste I guess, but here it is simply not particularly engaging.
Palahniuk's Haunted I didn't like too much either, too much filler and the overall concept too unbelievable and a bit pointless, but he has a very definitive flair for writing (albeit sometimes a bit overbearing and kind of a on-trick-pony whereby every character in every book kind of has the same voice: either man, woman or pious cultmenber).
Brite's early work definitely oozes atmosphere, gothic or not.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11634805548550029131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1354315648889218081.post-71921993388289418622011-02-26T23:45:40.115-08:002011-02-26T23:45:40.115-08:00I'm behind in reading blog reading, but just r...I'm behind in reading blog reading, but just read your review and enjoyed it. I worry the graphic sex might turn me off a bit, but I'll still make a note to maybe read this if I happen across a copy because it does sounds like a very cool read. Thanks for the review!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1354315648889218081.post-66151556899083896612011-02-10T12:00:56.514-08:002011-02-10T12:00:56.514-08:00Great review! During my lunch break I'd sit at the Whole Foods cafe and read it, smiling to myself that if passers-by knew just what kind of images PZB was putting in my head... Really, yes, one of the most extreme novels I've ever read! Recently I reread her first book of short stories; I should reread this as well. Will Erricksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16285306262078600804noreply@blogger.com
